I have a beautiful wife of 10 years and three, mostly wonderful, children. Hobbies are difficult when you’re in the child rearing stage of life, but I do CrossFit four times a week at 6:00 a.m., play videos games when I can, and live for Football. My main hobby is annoying my wife, apparently. It wasn’t until I met my wife, that I sought any treatment for my long-standing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Struggling with undiagnosed ADHD for a long time, particularly as a High School and College student, affected a lot of areas of my life because I didn’t know why things felt harder for me than they seemed to others. This led me to create a lot of false narratives to explain my struggles, such as feeling “broken, dumb, or not good enough.” I experienced frustration and shame from repeated criticisms from my teachers and parents. Psychoeducation and allowing myself to grieve what I didn’t get has motivated me to be an advocate and support for adolescents experiencing ADHD. I’m a two-time combat veteran and a Captain in the United States Army, but one of the greatest achievements of my lifetime was telling a teenager in a session that ADHD is not a behavior problem, it’s a brain difference and watching his face change from anger and shame to relief and hope.
